Posted: Wed Dec 02, 2009 1:25 am Post subject: Release of Atomic Tanks 4.2 |
|
|
This note is to announce the new arrival of Atomic Tanks, version 4.2.
This release is dedicated to my brother. Happy birthday, Mike!
First, I'll cover a quick run down of what's new and finish off with some
comments about the new networking feature.
Bullet point changes:
1. The game should now properly compile without threads.
2. Some fixes were added to avoid crashes on large screens and
64-bit machines.
3. Added networking game code.
4. Re-added .rc Windows resource file for Windows builders.
5. Fixed Russian war quotes to avoid odd symbols showing up in the text.
6. The AI now buys parachutes when it should and spreads its money around
more.
7. Fixed the price on the Riot Bomb, which was $300 instead of the proper
$3,000.
8. German language setting now uses unicode to avoid odd symbols in the text.
9. Fixed floating text so that Russian text isn't cut short.
10. Added new Slovak weapons file and translations. These were
provided by Jozef.
11. Adjusted the way rollers move if they hit a flat surface. The new
behaviour should be more predictable.
12. Added more Russian translations, provided by MyO.
13. Added some new tank styles: UFO, Future and Heavy. These can be selected
on the Player screen. Thanks to CtHx for making these. I personally really
enjoy the UFO theme.
14. Added a new command line option called "--nothread". This prevents the
game from using threads, even if they were compiled in. This may be
useful on multi-core machines which were crashing before.
This is a pretty short list, because of all the work which has gone into
adding the networking game code. You should know up front that the
network game code is still alpha level quality and is really just for
testing purposes right now. It's _not_ stable.
Warning aside, if you would like to try a networked game, please read the
"How to play a game over a network?" section of the README file. One person
will host a game and another will connect to you and take over a tank
controlled by the AI. If you'd like to see how it should work, you can
run two copies of Atanks on your computer at the same time. Start a
game with one and connect to it using the second instance of Atanks.
As usual, please send bug reports, questions and comments to me
at jessefrgsmith AT yahoo DOT ca. Or, you can post here on the
forum. |

Thanks alot!
"Short list"???
I think its pretty long nevertheless!
I hope the windows build comes soon (I know its not your job to do it) and the bugs people were having are fixed! |

Yes, I'll send messages to a few people who contribute Windows builds and see if we can get those uploaded.
One of the reasons I'm pushing this release out now instead of in a few weeks is to test some fixes which should (I hope) fix the crashes people have been reporting at Portable Apps. Some fixes are behind the scenes, but there is one work around which requires the command line. Please ask users who still experience crashes to run the program with
atanks.exe --nobackground --nothread
These options try to run the game without fancy backgrounds (which can cause a fault) and without threads (which can cause Atanks to crash on multi-core machines). |

| Windows build has been posted. I included both a zip file and an installer. I didn't compile with the network options. It looks like there's more needed to make it work in Windows. More than just including the -DNETWORK option in the makefile at least. |

I just tried the physics settings on archlinux:
uname -a:
Linux tron 2.6.31-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Nov 10 19:01:40 CET 2009 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 810 Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
atanks -h:
Atomic Tanks Version 4.2 (-h for help)
VGA card:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3300 Graphics
Possibly important info - I have disabled radeon modesetting on boot (in grub menu.lst):
radeon.modeset=0
xvinfo:
X-Video Extension version 2.2
glxinfo | grep render:
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R600 (RS780 9614) 20090101 TCL
(did not try other options)
Kind regards,
Vladimir |

| Great info, but unless I missed it, seems you didn't mention whether or not the bug happened to you too. |

strange. i also have kms off
| Code: | [root@darkstar ~]# grep radeon /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf
options radeon modeset=0 |
i'll try to compile it instead of pulling a package from repository and see what happens.. |
